Today I am so happy to celebrate Bridgewater Candle Company reaching their goal to provide 5 million meals for hungry children through the Light a Candle Feed a Child program!

Light a Candle Feed a Child

When you buy a candle in the Light a Candle Feed a Child program a portion of your money is donated to Rice Bowls, a non-profit organization. Rice Bowls uses each donation to provide 3 meals for a hungry child. In 2015, they reached the milestone of providing 5 million meals to hungry children around the world! The candles included in the program are the Small and Large Jar Candles, Mingle Candle Tins, and Inspirations for Life Tall Jar Candles.

I have always admired chalk art but haven’t tried my hand at it until now. I recently received The Complete Book of Chalk Lettering: Create and Develop Your Own Style by Valerie McKeehan and hurried out for some chalk to start practicing.

This book is like a beautiful and wonderful textbook – Valerie is very thorough in her explanations and the visuals are really helpful. The book is organized really well so you can move through the techniques easily as your skills improve. There are vocabulary terms you’ll have to get used to and once you do, you will find the tutorials fun and rewarding. The book also comes with fold out chalkboards so you can practice right away!

I started off with an easy cursive phrase to place behind our ceramic nativity.

Next, I decided to do a trickier holiday wreath to display on our mantle. I had no idea if it would turn out well or not but I am so happy with it! My mom and Noa are the artists in the family so I was nervous I was going to create something laughable. When Noa saw it he was really impressed! He also asked if he can borrow the book sometime.

Not too bad, right?! I really like how it turned out for my first try at working with chalk! I feel like our driveway sidewalk chalk game is going to be pretty strong this summer so keep an eye out for it on Instagram!

I got crafty and made some modern fall decorations for the house. First up is this pretty leaf banner.

I sent the kids out with a basket and a mission to find me perfect leaves: no tears, no holes. They spent about an hour hunting and gathering and came in with rosy cheeks and their harvest of beautiful fall leaves.

How to make your own modern fall leaf banner:

-Iron leaves between wax paper

(place a dishcloth between the wax paper and the iron)
-Measure out a long length of thin twine

-Tie the leaves on with smaller lengths of the twine
-Hang it on the wall with some washi tape.
-Admire your easy, modern, pretty, not cutesy or gag-inducing leaf banner with a nice homemade room simmer on the stove and a cup of cozy fall tea!

I have a few more modern fall decorations to share so stay tuned…
