room recipes : book review

You know that thing where you have a ‘design background’ but your house looks like a hot mess?

My degree is a mouthful (Bachelor of Science in Home and Family Living with an Emphasis in Housing and Interiors) and it basically means being a mom/having a family/making a house a home/doing it like a boss. I don’t struggle with the mama/family part but my house and interior has been put on the back burner. It’s embarrassing!

The point? I was feeling lost and annoyed with myself. Then, my good friend, Aly, mentioned a new diy interior design book her home is featured in. It’s called Room Recipes: A Creative and Stylish Guide to Interior Design by Tonya Olsen. It takes a ton of great rooms and breaks them down for you. This is helpful because I sometimes have a hard time with knowing why something works- I know I like it, but how do I do it at my house?

So, I jumped at the chance to read Room Recipes and hopefully be inspired…

I’m happy to say, I was! Most of the rooms aren’t my personal style (I’m more of an industrial/minimalist/brick walls/exposed pipes kind of girl) but I loved that the rooms were part of the story of the people they belonged to. The only story my home is telling right now is: they watch tv, someone plays the piano, they wear shoes, yawn, blah, blah, terrible carpet…Next? So, I decided to start giving my home some of my design energy and make it the cool place I want it to be, starting with the entry and stairs…here are some before shots- don’t break Pinterest with a flurry of mad, late-night pinning of these bad boys:

  1. This book sounds so neat! I’ve never read through an Interior Design book before. I’ll have to check it out!

  2. I can’t wait to see what your front entry looks like! I’ve been going through the same thing too, I feel like I need to put more energy in making my home a more beautiful place. A place where I’m proud to bring peeps over. Thanks for sharing the book idea, I’ll have to add that to my list.

  3. This book looks awesome. I need to do some cleaning up and redecorating. Going to have to check it out. Thanks :)

    • Good luck, I find that once I get things cleaned up I’m too exhausted to do anything more…I need my kids to make less mess!

  4. I can’t wait to see what you do with your entry!

  5. I have one space in my house that I have ignored bc it frustrates me. Maybe it would help to just commit myself to it! Can’t wait to see what you come up with (no pressure! haha).

    • My entire house frustrates me! I knew that putting it on the blog would force me to make some changes…so keep the pressure coming!
